Western Australia's $52 million export malting barley industry
is set for a boost after Agriculture Minister Kim Chance
launched a new malting barley with the potential to give Western
Australian growers increased sales into export markets in China
and Japan.
The new barley, named Vlamingh, has distinct malting
characteristics, which meet the demands of discerning domestic
and international malting markets.
Speaking after
the variety launch at Fremantle's maritime museum,
GRDC Western Panel Chairman
and Hyden grower, Dale Baker said Vlamingh would help Western
Australia consolidate its position as the major barley producing
state, accounting for one third of the national crop in 2004/05. |
