St. Louis, Missouri
July 31, 2006In a
presentation to investors today,
Monsanto Company's (NYSE:
MON) Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President Robb
Fraley will provide a mid-season update on projects within the
company's research and development pipeline. Fraley's remarks
will be part of a company-sponsored tour for investors of its
research and seed production facilities in the Corn Belt.
"Monsanto remains focused on maintaining our first-mover
advantage and delivering new technologies that growers tell us
would make a difference in the way they farm," Fraley said.
"Mid-season results on our research projects underscore the
continuing momentum of our work to turn important scientific
concepts into products that improve yield and productivity for
farmers."
Fraley's presentation will outline the latest test results from
the Monsanto's winter production field trials in Latin America,
as well as new analyses of research data. These mid-season
results highlight that:
- Drought-tolerant corn,
one of Monsanto's next-generation agronomic technologies and
one of the company's "high-impact technologies" - or "HIT"
projects - is showing yield advantages compared with its
conventional counterpart for a third-consecutive season.
This technology is currently in Phase 2 of the research
pipeline.
- Nitrogen-utilization
corn technology may provide farmers with a new way to
boost a farmer's yield in both normal- and limited-nitrogen
usage settings.
This technology is currently in Phase 1 of the research
pipeline.
- Dicamba-tolerant
soybeans, Monsanto's third-generation herbicide-tolerant
technology, may provide farmers with tolerance in both pre-
and post-emergent settings, as well as increase the
flexibility of herbicide applications.
This technology is currently in Phase 2 of the research
pipeline.
- Insect-protected
soybeans, the company's first insect-protection
technology for oilseeds, are demonstrating yield advantages
compared with its conventional counterpart in
both mild and moderate insect infestations.
This technology, which is currently in Phase 2
of the research pipeline, is intended to be commercialized
with the company's Roundup RReady2Yield technology, leading
to a new stacked product in soybeans.
- Omega-3 soybeans,
one of the company's families of enhanced oil products which
are better for consumers, is delivering comparable yield
results to commodity soybeans.
This technology is currently in Phase 3 of the research
pipeline.
In his presentation, Fraley will
also describe how Monsanto's research in breeding and
biotechnology complements the trend toward alternative fuels
created from crops. Fraley will describe how the industry is
currently supporting the world's increasing demand for renewable
energy resources, and how that demand may change in the coming
years.
"Farmers are at the forefront of innovation; they are constantly
looking for new ways to preserve the yield potential of their
crops as well as looking for new ways to enhance the value of
that crop," Fraley said. "Monsanto's research in breeding and
biotech, which is focused on boosting the yield-per-acre
potential of crops, represents an important way that both
farmers and consumers can reap the full potential of each
season's harvest."
Fraley will highlight how Monsanto's corn and oilseeds breeding
and biotech programs are contributing to the bioenergy sector
today, and will also discuss how the company's research could
provide additional support to the sector in the coming years.
Monsanto's breeders have already identified corn hybrids that
yield more ethanol per bushel. These hybrids are sold with the
company's trait technologies which help protect yield, and
ultimately the plant's ethanol output.
Fraley will describe how research at Renessen, Monsanto's joint
venture with Cargill, could serve as an important
next-generation technology for the ethanol sector. Renessen is
currently working on a combination of biotech, breeding and
processing projects designed to increase the nutrient value of
the animal feed co-product stream from ethanol.
