Two winter wheat varieties added to Hyland Seeds 2006 lineup
Blenheim, Ontario
July 11, 2006

New top performing soft red and soft white varieties now available

Hyland Seeds has added two new winter wheat varieties to their 2006 product offering. The new varieties, Emmit and Ashley, deliver high yield potential as well as fusarium tolerance.

“With the addition of these two new winter wheat varieties, Hyland Seeds is able to provide growers with varieties that deliver yield, grade and market value in all major wheat categories – soft red, soft white and hard red,” says Jim Olmsted of Hyland Seeds.

Emmit, a soft red winter wheat, and Ashley, a soft white winter wheat, are well suited for soil zones 1, 2, 3 and 4. Emmit is the highest yielding winter wheat variety for areas 1 and 2, according to Ontario Cereal Crop Committee results and delivers good fusarium tolerance. Ashley is another top yielding variety that provides excellent standability and good fusarium tolerance, in addition to a very good disease tolerance rating.

Combined with FT Wonder - a soft red variety, with the highest fusarium tolerance rating, good yield potential and consistent performance; Wisdom – a soft red, with consistent yield performance and very good fusarium tolerance; and Warthog – a hard red, which delivers high protein potential, excellent standability and very good fusarium tolerance, Hyland Seeds offers Ontario growers the most comprehensive winter wheat lineup.

According to Olmsted, when choosing which winter wheat variety to plant, growers typically consider a number of different factors. “Qualities such as protein levels and yield are important in both soft white and soft red varieties since they are used primarily as pastry wheat. For hard red varieties, a higher protein level is desirable since it is used as bread blend wheat,” he notes, adding, fusarium tolerance is also important to maintain seed quality.
