Australian research project focuses on canola as dual purpose grain and graze crop
Australia
July 13, 2006

A two year research project showing canola has excellent potential as a dual purpose grain and graze crop in high rainfall zones will be extended and include medium rainfall zones, after receiving GRDC support.

CSIRO farming systems agronomist, Dr John Kirkegaard said the trials had so far shown canola produced good feed and recovered to produce a respectable grain yield even after extensive winter grazing.

The study focused on winter and long-season spring canola varieties, with good blackleg resistance, near Canberra in 2004 and 2005.

"There is no reason the project's outcomes can't apply to high rainfall areas of WA," Dr Kirkegaard said.
