National Variety Trials (NVT)
results
Trial results have been
collected and are now being analysed for accuracy by
biometricians from the GRDC-funded
National Statistics Program.
Commencing on 23 January 2006,
analysed NVT data will become available progressively online -
visit
www.nvtonline.com.au
NVT aims to deliver results as
soon as possible after harvest. Normally results should begin
appearing at
www.nvtonline.com.au by Christmas each year, however, the
timing will be influenced by the season. As it is the first year
with a brand new system, it has taken longer than was expected
so 2005 results are about one month later than would be normally
expected.
At this stage we expect to have
published the analysed yield results of all NVT trials by 31
January. Other information (e.g. laboratory results) will be
added as it becomes available.
NVT Introduction
With the growing season in 2005
the GRDC is introducing a system of National Variety Trials
(NVT) to provide growers with independent information on the
performance of new varieties.
NVT will evaluate independent
of breeding programs new varieties of winter cereals, canola and
important pulse crops prior to their commercial release. Trials
will be carried out by selected Service Providers in Western
Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and
southern Queensland. The trial program is entirely funded by the
GRDC except in Western Australia where the GRDC has partnered
with the Department of Agriculture to evaluate barley, oats and
pulse varieties.
Key features of NVT are the
separation of release and evaluation trials, equal access for
all breeding programs, a national coordination of trials, and
the collection of trial data into a national database, for
on-line access by growers and their advisors, researchers and
State Departments of Agriculture.
ACAS Limited is contracted to
manage NVT on behalf of the GRDC.
NVT Structure and Setup
Legal Framework
The actors in NVT are:
- GRDC, as the funding body
and contracting agency
- ACAS Limited, as the
managing agency
- Participating Breeding
Programs and licensed variety agents
- NVT Service Providers
- Western Australian
Department of Agriculture, as an NVT partner to the GRDC in
Western Australia
These parties are linked
through a network of legal agreements:
- ACAS Agreement:
- regulates the
relationship between the GRDC and ACAS
- NVT Services Agreement:
- regulates the
relationship between the GRDC and each Service Provider
- NVT Participation
Agreement
- regulates the
relationship between the GRDC and each participating
breeding program and/or variety agent
- NVT Material Transfer
Agreement
- regulates the
relationship between participating breeding programs and
Service Providers
- NVT Collaboration
Agreement between the GRDC and the WA Department of
Agriculture
- Describes the
relationship between the GRDC and WADA and their roles
in NVT
Important Reference
Document
An important reference document
for both participating Breeders and Service Providers are the
"Protocols".
The Protocols regulate
important aspects of the NVT operations, including the
following:
- "Acceptance Criteria" for
NVT entries
- Seed supply and quality
- Target dates
- Trial site
characterisation
- Trial procedures
- Evaluation Procedures
The Protocols will be updated
from time to time to allow for the continuous evolution and
improvement of NVT and its operations. This will involve
stakeholder consultations as appropriate.
Any changes to the Protocols
will be posted on the GRDC website and marked as "New"

Protocols document in PDF or RTF
