Indian
companies to jointly develop pest resistant eggpant
By B.V. Mahalakshmi
In an effort to benefit global farmers who are affected by
severe pest infestation in eggplant (brinjal) cultivation, the
Cornell University-led, and USAID supported
Agricultural
Biotechnology Support Project (ABSP-II), is encouraging
development of fruit and shoot borer-resistant brinjal through a
global collaborative partnership.
As a step towards this, the
licence agreement for the ABSP II's fruit and shoot
borer-resistant (FSBR) eggplant, was signed recently between
Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Company (Mahyco) which is the technology
donor, Satguru Management Consultants Private Ltd, the
technology facilitator and the University of the Philippines.
ABSP II is the second phase of a partnership project involving
private and public institutions that aim to produce high quality
bio-engineered crops for target countries in the developing
world. The partnership, managed by Satguru Management
Consultants, which is a South Asia-based strategic advisory
body, envisages sharing of contemporary technology for the
benefit of public good.
In order to deliver country-specific varieties that will have
resistance to fruit and shoot borer, the technology transfer
envisages delivery of seeds to farmers on a no-profit basis,
thereby providing access to invaluable technologies to resource
constrained farmers. The project involves partnership of private
enterprises in the South Asian region, and public enterprises in
the South Asian and South East Asian region.
