HGCA - Vital pesticides information

CD on SOLAs available from HGCA - may be of interest if you grow minor cereal or oilseed crops

During the past two years HGCA has been involved in a project coordinated by the Horticultural Development Council and the Central Science Laboratory to compile a list of minor crops and pesticides for which SOLAs (Specific Off-Label Approvals) are required to replace the existing LTAEUs (Long-Term Arrangements for the Extension of Use). LTAEUs were a system by which the approval for use of a pesticide on a major crop could be extended to use on a minor crop. The system had been used in the UK for many years but is now illegal under EU Directive 91/414.

The results of the project have been compiled on a CD, which covers all edible crops, mostly horticultural crops. The minor arable crops within HGCAs remit covered include rye, triticale, durum wheat, soya and sunflower. Several very minor crops do not fall under the auspices of any organization. HGCA has 100 copies of the CD which can be mailed to levy payers on request.

Please contact clare.kelly@hgca.com if you want a copy of the CD.

Copies of all SOLAs are made available on the PSD website as they are issued. These can be found via the PSD search mechanism at: https://secure.pesticides.gov.uk/offlabels/search.asp

Minor cereals (rye, triticale and durum)

The PSD is currently evaluating a re-registration application for the FMC/Belchim product 'Platform S' (carfentrazone-based herbicide). There is a SOLA (Specific Off-Label Approval) for use on durum wheat, rye and triticale grassland (seed crop).

The current approval will be revoked on 31 May 2009 and Platform S will be given a new MAPP number once it has been re-registered. A new re-registration application for this SOLA will have to be submitted after this deadline.

The cost of applying for a SOLA is likely to be £470 per crop group - assuming that rye, triticale and durum wheat are classified as one crop group - then it will either be one fee of £470 - or 2 if grass is considered as a separate crop group. This cost will have to be borne by the industry. Please contact clive.edwards@hgca.com who will pass on any comments to PSD.
