Under the auspices of
the National Plant Genome Initiative (NPGI), the
National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department
of Energy (DOE), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) announce their intention to support large-scale
sequencing of the maize genome. Previous funding has
supported development of maize genome sequence
resources, including physical and genetic maps,
Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs), sequences derived from
gene-enriched genomic libraries, Bacterial Artificial
Chromosome (BAC) sequences, and a community genome
database. The objective of this program solicitation is
to solicit proposals that build on these resources to
develop a comprehensive sequence resource for the maize
genome that will capture the majority of the sequence
information in a timely and cost-effective manner.
