Landec's seed business expands line of technology-based seed products
Menlo Park, California
August 26, 2004

Landec Corporation (Nasdaq:LNDC), a developer and marketer of technology-based polymer products for food, agricultural and licensed partner applications announced today that its agricultural seed subsidiary, Landec Ag, Inc., has introduced its new line-up of hybrid seeds for 2005 achieving the broadest selection of new seed technologies ever offered in its history -- seeds with genetic traits, on-seed chemical treatments, and Landec's Intellicoat(R) polymer coatings.

Landec Ag, through its Fielder's Choice Direct(R) brand, recently introduced 26 new corn hybrids for 2005, bringing the line-up to 116 hybrid seed varieties it currently has for sale. In addition, Fielder's Choice Direct is now offering 49 corn hybrids with Early Plant(R) Intellicoat seed coating technology.

During the last three years, Landec Ag has added a total of 81 new hybrids to the product line-up, including varieties with the latest traits and technologies, such as, YieldGard(R) Rootworm Corn, YieldGard(R) Plus, Herculex I(R), Roundup Ready(R), and Liberty Link(R).

"We continually ask customers about their needs and work to select the right products and technologies to meet those needs," said Tom Crowley, Landec Ag's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Customers have more options than ever and they expect their suppliers to help them through the maze of technology choices. Landec Ag is strongly positioned to provide not only leading seed products but also a perspective on evolving seed technologies."

As a key component of its unique direct-to-the-farmer sales and marketing approach, Fielder's Choice Direct provides immediate access to agronomic support over the phone. Thousands of farmers know Landec Ag, which is based in Indiana, and its Fielder's Choice Direct branded products. Landec Ag specializes in hybrid seeds and personal agronomic service offered through thirty-five seed consultants who assist customers daily with their hybrid selections. The seed consultants are available to take orders or answer questions by phone 15 hours a day, Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday mornings.

Examples of New Corn Seed Technology Offerings for 2005

-- YieldGard Rootworm Corn offers farmers the best protection ever offered against corn rootworm. This new level of in-plant protection promises farmers enhanced yields versus soil-applied insecticides.

-- YieldGard Plus Corn now offers in-plant protection against western, northern and Mexican corn rootworms and European and southwestern corn borer insects, for a zone of protection that extends from the roots to the ears and from planting until harvest.

-- Herculex I is a new insect protection trait offering control of European and southwestern corn borer insects and protection against fall armyworm, western bean cut worm and black cutworm.

These three new technology offerings are also offered with Intellicoat Early Plant corn coating technology, which protects the seed from the risk of chilling injury and allows farmers to plant corn seed up to four weeks earlier than normal. For many farmers, the extra days of planting during the early spring can translate into higher yields and improvements in operational efficiencies.

Landec Ag Manages Complexity for Farmers

With so many new technologies available, either in the seed or on the seed, seed companies must offer many more varieties and assist the farmer to evaluate the increasing number of choices.

Dennis Schlott, Landec Ag's Vice President of Sales and Product Management, said, "Managing this increasing complexity is where Landec Ag can outperform others due to the efficiency of our direct sales and marketing model supported by our unique and leading-edge proprietary information systems. Our information systems provide our sales force with in-depth information about our customer's farming trends and requirements, while also helping the farmer to better evaluate his seed choices in order to match appropriate offerings with the farmer's specific requirements. In addition, we work from real-time inventory and can assure farmers they will receive the hybrids, sizes and technologies they order. Our approach is changing the economics and efficacy of seed sales in contrast to the traditional farmer/dealer network."

"Now more than ever customers rely on us not only for seed information, but also for decisions about herbicide selection, pest control and other cropping practices. Our seed consultants are experts in evaluating the various technologies and recommending the best options for farmers," continued Schlott.
