Australian pulse production could double in 2003 as growers
recover from the 2002 drought.
August crop forecasts tipped pulse production to rise above two
million tonnes, from just over one million tonnes in 2002. High
value human consumption pulses, such as chickpea, faba bean and
field pea, were expected to lead the increase, with production
lifting almost 150 per cent.
According to Pulse Australia, those indicators may be tempered
by recent dry, windy eastern states conditions, however a report
at the Grains Research and Development Corporation supported
Field Pea Focus 2003 conference suggested WA remained on target
for excellent lupin, faba bean and field pea yields.
