The
Ministry of Agriculture and the Industrial Apprentice Service
(Sebrae) are holding the III RioFlor Conference to discuss the
situation and future of the flower markets. The conference is
taking place in Rio de Janeiro.
According to Sebrae, flower growing is labor intensive (it needs
15 to 20 workers per hectare) and can bring in revenue of
R$50,000 to R$100,000 per hectare. That makes it 30 times more
profitable than corn or beans.
At the moment, total turnover in the flower sector in Brazil is
around US$2 billion annually. Worldwide it is worth over US$50
billion annually. Because of the country's climate and soil,
there is plenty of room to expand exports of Brazilian flowers.
