Delivering consistently high
quality canola seed for Canadian farmers is the mission of a
newly appointed hybrid canola seed production team based at
Lethbridge, Alberta.
Pioneer Hi-Bred Limited recently charged the new team with
responsibilities for seed multiplication, conditioning, cleaning
and packaging of all Pioneer® brand canola seed for distribution
in Western
Canada and throughout North America. Combined with existing
parent seed production operations near Georgetown, Ontario, the
addition of the Lethbridge effort gives Pioneer a production
team unparalleled in the Canadian canola industry.
"With a new staff dedicated to
producing high quality seed, growers can be confident in both
the performance and supply of Pioneer Hi-Bred's canola seed
products," says Darrel Armstrong, canola commercial seed manager
for the new Lethbridge operation. "We will be contracting with
growers in southern Alberta, primarily on irrigated land, to
fulfill our production requirements. In addition, we will
continue to contract with premium facilities for conditioning,
treating and packaging services."
Armstrong leads a team of three
staff agronomists dedicated to seed crop research and agronomic
management critical to high quality canola seed production. He
brings 11 years of seed production experience with Pioneer
genetics to his new position - the last four as manager of seed
production supply. Armstrong is a graduate of the University of
Alberta with a B.Sc. in agriculture.
Danielle Letain was the first
agronomist to join the team and brings a wealth of hybrid
production knowledge to the location. Since completing a B.Sc.
in agriculture at the University of Manitoba, Danielle has spent
much of her career working with hybrid canola, and was most
recently a hybrid
canola production co-ordinator.
Robert Wauters has extensive
knowledge on hybrid canola production from his seven years in
the business. He completed a diploma from Olds College in
agronomy, is working on completing a degree in agriculture at
the University of Lethbridge, and has his Certified Crop Advisor
designation.
Chris Nish is the latest
agronomist for canola production on site at Pioneer's Lethbridge
operation. With a diploma from Olds College in seed and grain
technology, he brings a solid combination of hybrid canola
production experience and agricultural retail knowledge to his
new position.
Since late last year, Pioneer
brand canola seed has been available across the Prairie
Provinces through Pioneer Hi-Bred's network of sales
professionals, as well as through the extensive distribution
channels of Agricore United and James Richardson International
(JRI).
