Sweet corn research in North Queensland

February 12, 2003

The sweet corn industry is set to expand on North Queenslandıs Atherton Tableland, west of Cairns, with $350,000 of Federal Government support for trials by Brisbane based cannery Golden Circle Ltd.

Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Regional Services, Ron Boswell, said the project would build on the results of trials of sweet corn varieties on four farms at Mareeba. "Golden Circle has invested considerable money and energies into developing and evaluating sweet corn varieties for specific international markets, such as Japan and Korea,"

Senator Boswell said. "Samples of sweet corn from earlier trials have been well received in Asian markets and we hope the product will experience strong export demand. If the sweet corn trials prove successful Golden Circle has indicated that a processing plant will go ahead in the Tableland region. A successful sweet corn processing facility in Mareeba could bring enormous economic and social benefits to the region, including the creation of more than 50 new jobs, a significant export potential and security for growers."
