In February 2002, Mid-West
Seed Services, Inc. (MWSS) became the first U.S.-based
independent seed-testing laboratory to achieve ISO9001
certification. MWSS quality policy is to provide quick,
accurate, and diagnostic seed and grain testing services. The
quality system assists in meeting customer needs and strives to
continually improve the system and deliver the highest level of
service possible.
The ISO9000 series of standards has become an international
reference for quality requirements in business, and is
compatible in industries from seed testing to manufacturing. The
MWSS quality system contains details of standard laboratory
protocols, training of employees, customer input and continual
improvement of the system. Every employee has been part of the
process through writing and revising procedures and training to
earn this certification. Mid-West Seed Services, Inc. is proud
of their employees and this achievement.
The laboratories of MWSS continue to be involved in the
International Seed Testing Association’s (ISTA) proficiency
testing program and are working towards ISTA laboratory
accreditation in the coming year. The quality system is
continually tested by internal and external blind check sources,
USDA and professional association proficiency testing, and
internal and external audits.
MWSS provides seed germination, vigor, seed analysis,
herbicide trait testing, Bt protein testing, GMO, ELISA,
DNA-Event ID, seed quality workshops, seed technologist
training, research services and quality improvement consulting
services. A wide variety of species is tested from alfalfa to
zinnias, and includes corn, soybeans, cotton, rice, canola and
many others. MWSS is an ISTA member laboratory and has 20 seed
technologists, including three RST’s and six CGT’s on staff.
