Delta and Pine Land Company's DP 6100 RR Acala receives San Joaquin Valley Acala status

Scott, Mississippi
March 13, 2002

In last week's meeting of the San Joaquin Valley (California) Cotton Board, Delta and Pine Land Company's DP 6100 RR Acala was awarded SJV Acala status. To obtain approval as an Acala, a variety must meet fiber quality requirements set by the SJV Cotton Board. Once these requirements are met and Acala status is granted, farmers can grow and sell the variety as an Acala.

"We understand the special needs of the cotton growers and have a variety of research and testing programs in place to provide them with very-high quality products," according to Jim Willeke, D&PL's vice president of sales and marketing. "DP 6100 RR Acala is an example of how we continually try to
provide growers in California and all across the Cotton Belt with products that fit their niche in the industry."

Glenn Powell, California regional sales manager for D&PL, says "We have tested DP 6100 RR Acala in the San Joaquin Valley for the past two years and found great success with the variety. Growers are looking forward to having a new option that offers strong agronomics with the benefits of the Acalas. With the addition of DP 6100 RR to our product lineup, D&PL now offers 16 varieties in the Acala, Pima and upland types to California growers. And, we are moving forward with several more varieties in our testing program."

Seed availability for the 2002 planting season is excellent, according to Powell.

DP 6100 RR is a tall, mid-full season Roundup Ready variety with smooth leaves and excellent seedling vigor. D&PL research shows that the variety has an average staple length of 37.7, strength of 33.7 and micronaire of 4.3. The variety has good resistance to Verticillium. As with all varieties, crop management practices and growing conditions can affect the actual performance of the variety.

Delta and Pine Land Company is a commercial breeder, producer and marketer of cotton planting seed, as well as soybean seed in the Cotton Belt. For more than 80 years, the Mississippi-based company has used its extensive plant breeding programs drawing from a diverse germplasm base to develop superior varieties. Delta and Pine Land (NYSE: DLP) has offices in eight states and facilities in several foreign countries.
