Australian Office of
the Gene Technology Regulator has received four applications for
release of GMO cotton |
July 15, 2002
The
OGTR has received four
applications under section 40 of the
Gene Technology Act 2000 (the Act)
which, if approved, would involve limited releases of
genetically modified organisms into the Australian environment,
under controlled conditions. These applications (reference
numbers DIR 014/2002, DIR 015/2002, DIR 016/2002 and DIR
017/2002) have been made by CSIRO in respect of different types
of genetically modified cotton. The details of the individual
applications are as follows:
®)
and insecticidal/herbicide-tolerant (Bollgard II®/Roundup
Ready®) cotton (Gossypium
hirsutum) in 17 shires in New South Wales and Queensland.
Twenty sites would be involved, covering a total area of 42
hectares.
DIR 015/2002 - An
application for the release of genetically modified
herbicide-tolerant (Liberty ®)
cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in the shire of Narrabri in
New South Wales. One site would be involved, covering a total
area of 2 hectares.
DIR 016/2002 - An
application for the release of genetically modified
insecticidal/herbicide- tolerant cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)
in the shire of Narrabri in New South Wales. Two sites would
be involved, covering a total area of 1.5 hectares.
DIR 017/2002 - An
application for the release of genetically modified
insecticidal cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in the shires
of Narrabri and Moree Plains in New South Wales.
Three sites would be involved,
covering a total area of 3 hectares. As the Gene Technology
Regulator, I would like to advise people who have previously
expressed interest in knowing about work with GMOs in Australia
that they:
-
now have the opportunity to
access information about the applications, including the
applications themselves; and
-
will shortly have the
opportunity to comment on the risk assessments and risk
management plans being prepared by my Office with input from
State and Territory Governments, relevant local councils, the
Commonwealth Environment Minister, key Commonwealth agencies
and the Gene Technology Technical Advisory Committee.
