Landec food subsidiary completes implementation of business system realizing improved efficiencies

Menlo Park, California
January 7, 2002

Landec Corporation's (Nasdaq: LNDC) food technology subsidiary, Apio, Inc., announced today that the company has successfully implemented J.D. Edwards' OneWorld(R) enterprise software, including
Financial, Distribution and Manufacturing application suites. The new system significantly improves management effectiveness by providing more timely and actionable information and by improving forecasting capabilities thus resulting in quicker reactions to volatile markets and customer demands.

The system is designed to give better and more timely information to both Apio and to its suppliers, resulting in improved and synergistic operating efficiencies. Apio employed DigiTerra, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of CIBER, Inc. to assist in the configuration, testing and implementation of the new system, which included the development of a grower accounting and crop management solution.

The system provides improved visibility to information in many areas, including: (1) improving information exchange with customers, vendors and growers, (2) reducing financial reporting cycles, (3) identifying recovery costs for services provided, (4) ensuring the performance of supplier contracts for goods and services, and (5) monitoring of product quality.

With the new system, Apio is also able to monitor and react to manufacturing performance in a more timely manner, based on more accurate information. In addition, the company will be able to consolidate Intellipac(TM) packaging operations with its value-added food division to create better coordination and efficiencies in producing and delivering packaged products.

Apio's Chief Operating Officer Bruce Knobeloch said, "This past April, Landec announced its intention to develop and implement a new business system in its food technology subsidiary. Apio's management recognized the strategic importance of implementing a more robust and fully integrated system to enable and support its significant business growth opportunities. The new business system is now providing Apio with state-of-the-art information capabilities to provide high quality products and services to its customers and growers."

"We expect to significantly benefit from more streamlined processes, greater management awareness of key metrics that drive our business, more efficient use of our resources and the improved ability to effectively manage our manufacturing and grower related activities," continued Knobeloch. "In 10 months, we have developed, installed and delivered a solid, cost effective business system that establishes a concrete foundation for future profitable growth."

Gary Steele, Landec Corporation's President and CEO concluded, "With the successful implementation of J.D. Edwards OneWorld, we are continuing to execute our strategic initiatives, one of which is to establish an infrastructure that provides lower cost operations, while at the same time increasing the ability to better identify and pursue higher margin product and market opportunities."

About Apio

Founded in 1979 and headquartered in Guadalupe, California, Apio is a major processor, shipper, distributor and exporter of vegetables and fruits. The company markets a full line of fruit, vegetable and fresh cut vegetables under the Eat Smart(TM) brand using Landec's patented Intellipac breathable membrane packaging.

Since 1996, Apio has commercially marketed products that use Landec's Intellipac breathable membranes for Apio's Eat Smart fresh-cut produce line of products.

About Intellipac Technology

Apio's fresh cut specialty packaged products and iceless case liner products are packed in packaging that uses Intellipac breathable membrane technology. Intellipac specialty packaging extends shelf life, maintains crispness and reduces dehydration, discoloration and unpleasant odors and flavors associated with produce by creating an ideal modified atmosphere inside the package. The packaging technology has a very high rate of gas exchange, which results in the appropriate atmosphere for the
product within the package.

A unique feature of Intellipac specialty packaging is its ability to compensate for temperature abuse. As a result of the temperature responsiveness of the Intellipac breathable membranes, the optimal atmosphere inside the case liner is maintained as temperatures change during the distribution process. This feature is one of the key reasons the company's Intellipac specialty packaged products can be shipped to distant markets without ice.
