In December 1977 the first coated seed produced in Canada
rolled off Canadian Seed
Coaters production line in Brampton Ontario. Today the
company is celebrating its 25th year of supplying
technologically advanced seed enhancements to Canadian
agricultural producers.
The Brampton plant no longer exists, having been replaced in February
1983 by a larger (7,000 square feet) but still somewhat
unsophisticated plant in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Today,
after several rounds of improvements, this plant is the premier
seed coating facility of its kind in the world. It is equipped
with the state of the art Precision Coater 5000 for canola and
the even more technologically advanced RP-36-DB coater for
forage and turf seed.
Since the company’s modest beginnings (it produced 197.2
tonne – 434,750 lbs in their first year) several expansions have
taken places and it now owns own a 40,000 square foot building
which houses production, marketing, quality control and research
facilities.
By December 2002 the company expects to have produced in
excess of 64,000 tonne (141,100,000lbs) of coated canola, forage
and turf seed.
Other highlights for the company include the establishment of
its US subsidiary, Precision Seed Coaters, in 1989 and its
ISO-9002 registration in 1996.
During the course of its development the company has had
several different owners but it has recently entered a new phase
in its growth with its acquisition by
SeedVentures, Inc., a
subsidiary of Georgetown Holdings of Fargo, North Dakota.
Throughout its history the Staff of the Company have been of
paramount importance to its success. Mr. Trevor Bailie (now the
General Manager of SeedVentures, Inc.) has been with the company
since its inception in 1977 and Mr. Kelly Ray (now the General
Manager of Canadian Seed Coaters) joined the company when it
expanded to North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1983.
Canadian Seed Coaters is justifiably proud of achieving this
milestone and is confident that it will continue to play a
leading role in the North American and international seed
coating industry in the future.
