Syngenta Seeds introduces 24 new products for 2003 planting season

Golden Valley, Minnesota
August 1, 2002

Syngenta Seeds, Inc. expands its extensive product portfolio with the introduction of 24 new NK® Brand corn hybrids and soybean varieties for 2003 planting. Combined with the company’s existing line-up of high-yielding hybrids and varieties, these new products will enable farmers to spread production risk across an even broader range of top-yielding offerings and to select specific input traits that are most conducive to their individual growing conditions.

"By selecting a portfolio of consistently performing hybrids, farmers can better manage the impact of varying growing conditions on product performance," explains Marc Hennen, corn marketing manager for Syngenta Seeds. "We make a significant investment in product research every year to assure our customers an ample range of characteristics from which to make their crop decisions and build a strong portfolio."

The 2003 NK Brand product portfolio additions are indicative of Syngenta Seeds’ commitment to helping farmers manage crop performance. This spring, the company introduced a program that gives growers convenient access to localized Growing Degree Unit (GDU) data for better predicting likely in-season hybrid performance. Syngenta Seeds’ proprietary NK Brand® Agrometer™ Growing Degree Units Monitor is now providing farmers localized GDU data in weather updates by farm broadcasters, as well as via in-store displays and dealerships totaling nearly 1,000 locations in more than a dozen states.

10 New Hybrids Join NK Brand Corn Line-Up

Syngenta Seeds has added 10 new hybrids to its corn portfolio, five of which include YieldGard® insect protection and resistance to Liberty® herbicide to provide farmers the benefits of both in-plant insect protection and excellent weed control. The 2003 corn offerings also include two new hybrids that deliver herbicide resistance through the CLEARFIELD® Production System.

"Each of these is a high-yielding hybrid adapted for use by growers in either the eastern, central or western Corn Belt, " adds Jeff Jorgensen, corn product manager, Syngenta Seeds.

These new NK Brand corn hybrids, like all of the company’s products, are approved for export to the European Union, Japan and all other major U.S. trading partners.

New Soybean Varieties Deliver Built-In Protection

Fourteen new soybean varieties join the NK Brand product lineup in 2003. The new entries address

continuing customer demand for herbicide-tolerant traits. "Our capabilities in off season production allow us to rapidly introduce these new varieties in volume this year," explains Mark Schmidt, soybean product manager.

"These NK Brand soybean varieties continue our tradition of more than 30 years of breeding and releasing varieties with top yields, demonstrated consistency and strong overall performance," Schmidt emphasizes. "Our historic strength in research and development enables us to market top preforming genetics across all soybean maturity zones."

In addition to extensive Roundup Ready tolerance in the lineup, many of the new NK Brand soybean varieties also feature in-bred resistance to Phytophthora root rot and soybean cyst nematode, Schmidt points out.

Syngenta is a world-leading agribusiness. The company ranks first in crop protection, and third in the high-value commercial seeds market. Pro forma sales in 2001 were approximately US $6.3 billion. Syngenta employs more than 20,000 people in over 50 countries. The company is committed to sustainable agriculture through innovative Research and Technology.
