Mendel Biotechnology is an agriculturally-oriented
biotechnology company founded in 1997 with a science advisory board (SAB) consisting of
Drs. Chris Somerville (Carnegie Institution), Fred Ausubel (Harvard Medical School),
Jonathan Jones (Sainsbury Laboratory, UK), Brian Staskawicz (UC Berkeley) and Elliot
Meyerowitz (Caltech). The company's aim is to explore the Arabidopsis genome to discover
agriculturally important genes. Arabidopsis is a perfect system for this research because
of its small and well characterized genome (consisting of 20,000-25,000 genes), rapid
life-cycle and small size. Mendel Biotechnology is therefore uniquely positioned to
conduct world class science in the area of plant functional genomics and to translate
these discoveries into traditional and non-traditional agricultural products. |
