Research Associate Senior I (Team Leader/Product Characterization)

Location: Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA

JOB DESCRIPTION:

BASF´s Crop Protection Business at BASF´s facility in Research Triangle Park (RTP) is seeking an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic individual interested in a career in Formulation Development. BASF Corporation in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is headquarters for the BASF Crop Protection NAFTA Division and BASF Plant Science L.L.C.

The main focus of the position is to lead a team of analytical chemists to support the development, registration and manufacture of new products and formulations for Crop Protection, and advise on their use to broaden the market and increase business results.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Develop and implement detailed, often complex, analytical research programs consistent with approved business cases for active ingredients and formulations
  • Lead analytical research projects, both regional and global, to achieve company objectives and communicate project status through technical reports and presentations
  • Liaise closely with stakeholders from Formulations, Marketing, Biology, Regulatory, Environmental Fate and Manufacturing to understand business needs and determine the best analytical development path forward to meet those needs
  • Design, conduct and interpret analytical studies (composition, phys-chem properties, metabolism, residue) to determine food, farmworker and environmental safety of agrochemical products, enabling product registration and sales
  • Act as customer advocate, both internal and external, as the primary point of contact for ensuring analytical procedures and results are executed in an effective and timely manner while in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Work cooperatively with Sales, Manufacturing, Registration, and Field personnel in furnishing technical assistance to demonstrate the usefulness of company products, and/or to solve field or other problems that might affect company relations with customers or regulatory agencies
  • Utilize existing and implement new analytical technologies within a development program to foster innovation across the analytical community
  • Participate in the scale-up and launch of the developed products by transfer of analytical know-how to Regulatory and Manufacturing as part of Product Launch Excellence
  • Train, mentor, develop and supervise lab personnel

QUALIFICATIONS: BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline such as chemistry or biology, plus 5 years of industrial experience; or MS with 7 years of industrial experience; or BS with 9 years industrial experience
  • Analytical Development and Product Characterization experience, preferably in Crop Protection (related industries are acceptable)
  • Thorough knowledge of analytical technologies in Separation Science (HPLC, HPLC/MS, GC and GC/MS) and Spectroscopy (IR, UV/VIS, NMR and MS)
  • Demonstrated record of achievement for analytical research and development from discovery to commercialization phases
  • Proven ability to lead, plan, coordinate and complete research projects on difficult problems with cross-functional teams
  • Track record of generating new innovation and application of cutting-edge analytical technology
  • Serious safety focus, attention to detail, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Interface with R&D and Manufacturing departments through past roles
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Must be willing to travel

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline such as chemistry or biology, plus 5 years of practical industrial experience in Separation Science (HPLC, HPLC/MS, GC and GC/MS) or Spectroscopy (IR, UV/VIS, NMR and MS)
  • Prior supervisory/leadership experience
  • Experience working in a GLP environment and knowledge of regulatory guidelines (EPA FIFRA, EPA TSCA)
  • Knowledge of analytical methods for formulation and application technologies (granulation, emulsion, encapsulation) in the field of Crop Protection
  • Expertise in one or more of the areas of raw materials, chemistry, finished product specifications, analysis, fate in crops or animals, and environmental safety
  • Excellent performance management skills for self and subordinates
