| I
would like to suggest that biotechnology is the greatest challenge of
all.
It will certainly affect our lives and will play a major role in
the future of our industry. Unfortunately, the opposition is still
strong today, but I am sure it’s only a matter of time.
The
breakthrough will come and I have a feeling it will come when biotech
will bring added value to the consumer.
So far, the main traits
inserted into the transgenic varieties targeted the benefit of the
farmer. I am convinced that public acceptance of transgenic varieties
with added value to the consumer will be high.
I would like to take
this opportunity and call those giants, who already have the
technology, to breed in this direction and try to help third
world / developing countries. Their efforts will surely be appreciated
by non-profit organizations that are active in such countries and will
be happy to finance the purchase of such seeds. This can be a good way
to build public sympathy and slowly melt the resistance.
In Israel, so far, the commercialization of transgenic material has
not yet started. Our approach is still more European, but again, added
value to the consumer will change the picture.
