Dr. Jagveer S. Sindhu - The Asia and Pacific Seed Association

October 2002

What do you believe are major contributions the Asia Pacific seed sector has made, and will make, to the global seed industry?

APSA's contributions to the seed sector are very well known and the integration of Asian seed industry to the global seed industry is shaping well.

The basic objectives of APSA have been to establish a regional forum for
(a) the exchange of experience,
(b) the formulation of priorities and recommendations on seed policy issues, and
(c) the stimulation of technical and economic co-operation among members for improving seed trade and the supply of quality seeds.

APSA achieved these objectives during the past eight years. In addition, APSA has been generating information on key seed markets in the region as well as arranging seminars, workshops and training. This has ushered into an era of growth in the seed industry as evidenced by the growing awareness both of the advantages of using quality seeds and the increasing role of the private seed industry in quality seed trade.

APSA plans to ensure a key role for the Asian seed industry in the global seed business.

In the Asian and Pacific region, agriculture is the mainstay of the economies of the majority of countries. However, a big gap still exists between demand and supply of quality seeds in the entire region. During the past few years, gains have been made but much has yet to be achieved. APSA's endeavours are aimed at helping the Asian seed industry grow further, and at becoming good enough to supply technology and quality seeds to Asian farmers when and where needed. The future growth of the industry will increase the region's share of the global seed business.
