After
returning from California and starting a full time career in
the vegetable seed business in 1971 the learning curve was
quite steep.
I was officially appointed marketing director at the age of 24 and got stuck with
issues such as employing salesmen, obtaining exclusives from
international seed suppliers, improve packaging and product
presentation, registration of varieties, technical
information, training, and advertising and promotion.
The learning curve became a little
steeper when my parents had to move to the Cape for business
reasons and I was left to run the company in its entirety from
1973 onward.
My father, in his wisdom, decided to
add complimentary and supplementary products to our vegetable
seed range, and we got involved in the formulating, manufacturing
and marketing of specialty foliar feeds and other nutrient
mixtures. This venture took energy and time to establish, but
is to this day still very much a part of our company’s
expanding product range.
