Dr. Marco Nardi - Italian Seed Trade Association

April 2003

What other challenges do Italian seed companies face at this time?
At the moment, particular attention is paid to the proposals put forward in last January by the EC Commission to review the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), for the possible consequences on seed activity. The decrease of aids given to durum wheat production and to rice and herbage seeds could entail a respective reduction of the demand and of the use of certified seeds. This situation could affect also other productions.

The topics then vary according to the sectors. For instance, for the vegetable group, we are facing the administrative phytosanitary requirements for the seed exports to South America (PRA), as well as the matter of the relationships with the plant raisers, who are more and more important in the production process.
