Dr. Marco Nardi - Italian Seed Trade Association

April 2003

Maybe you would also tell him a little bit about the Italian seed companies...
Today, AIS membership counts 175 seed companies, active in all sectors: herbages, vegetables, cereals, maize, oil seeds and sugarbeet (/www.sementi.it/ais_e_associate.htm ). There is a great diversity of seed companies operating in Italy, not only from the point of view of size and turnover, but also for their structure and type of activities.

We have in Italy subsidiaries of the major seed companies but also family-owned companies that operate at the regional level. Close to integrated companies, combining research, multiplication and distribution, there are firms operating in the distribution while others are devoted exclusively to the multiplication for third parties.

However, I think that all the major multinational seed companies are present in the Italian market, directly or indirectly. This confirms the importance and the interest towards Italian agriculture, that obviously takes advantage of the best and innovative varieties and seed products that are offered.

It is sufficient to consider the unit yields for maize, among the highest in the world, as well as the intensive vegetable productions.
