How do the Initiatives function? how does the work proceed? how much has been accomplished so far?
There are two groups for each IHSI, the policy group and the technical group. The policy group, which now meets in conjunction with the FIS annual meeting, assures that the direction of the ISHI technical group is in-line with the goals of the international seed industry. The technical group is made up of the "technical experts" in the seed industry and seed testing labs. The Technical group of ISHI is divided into working groups for each commodity group; there is a technical group for cucurbits, for example.

ISHI members meet about every 8 months to discuss projects under way and projects that need to be started. In the early meetings, our primary function was to determine priorities and determine procedures to accomplish tasks. Each commodity technical group is responsible for creating priorities and initiating projects. After a project is finished it is the technical groups responsibility to write a protocol and submit it for publication on the FIS website and have it reviewed for acceptance as a "working sheet" by the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).

To date, ISHI has published a working on-line manual of seed health testing methods. The latest version of this manual can be found on the FIS website: www.worldseed.org. We are also ready to publish our first working sheet with ISTA; the ISHI method for testing brassica seed for black rot bacteria contamination. In my opinion, our biggest accomplishment to date has been to get experts from 5 very different countries to openly discuss seed health issues in a format that is focused on cooperation. Although, the production of internationally accepted methods has been slower than anticipated, the sharing of information and the cooperative attitude of these scientists, often with different country and company goals has been remarkable. The sustained effort of the primary core of these companies is also quite commendable.
