How is ag
biotech impacting the seed industry
in your country? |
 |
The impact of agricultural biotechnology
has been positive for the US seed industry. Technology has
been shared by many companies, resulting in rapid adoption by
US farmers. For example, the market share for Roundup ready
soybeans is about 60% and growing.
In the short term, there will
continue to be regulatory uncertainties involving applications
of agricultural biotechnology. However, in the long term,
input traits, such as insect resistance and herbicide
tolerance, will become standard agronomic tools worldwide.
Opportunities for genetic enhancements will be virtually
unlimited, and knowledge of how to do it will be owned not by
a few companies, but shared by many. Ownership of intellectual
property, which has been relatively concentrated, will become
more diffuse.
