What role do
the new genetic engineering technologies play in the flower
sector? |
 |
Right now,
genetic engineering is not a factor in flowers. Doing this
type of work on flowers is more difficult than field crops,
for example, because of the fact that we are selling small
quantities of a lot of varieties instead of large quantities
of a few varieties.
Also, some of the advantages gained
through genetic engineering, such as herbicide resistance, are
harder to take to the garden than to the commercial growing
field.
This, of course, doesn’t mean that
genetic engineering won’t play a role in flowers, but it may
take longer to get here.
