Growing up in a
family business has been enjoyable.Goldsmith Seeds was
started when I was 7, and for the first several years it
employed mainly family members (my parents, grandparents, and
the four sons), so we all did a little bit of everything.
This created a great base for my career, as I have a
working knowledge of many aspect of the industry, from
research to production to sales and order fulfillment. This
could only be accomplished during those early growth years,
and I don’t think someone coming into a business the size that
we are today would be able to have the same experience.
Because of the family nature of the company, other employees
not only worked for the company but they also became members
of an extended family. This is what I consider to be the most
valuable part of a true family business.
