Donald COLES - Managing Director - Valley Seeds, Australia

September 2002

What important lessons have you learned during your years in the seed industry?
The most important lesson that I have learnt is the value of education. Both formal and industry education are important. I spent many years working in the seed industry before doing a Master of Business Administration. Until recently many in the Australian industry did not travel to investigate their industry in other regions of the world.

It is always hard to justify the investment of attending the FIS and visiting companies in various countries, but it is always worth it. Since FIS in Australia in 1999, attendance at this event by Australians has significantly increased. As the initial chairman of the FIS Organizing Committee, followed by Max Jongebloed, I am very pleased that so many Australians are now attending FIS regularly.

Even if you cannot travel, take time every day to read the SeedQuest news section. Nobody in the industry can afford to miss news events as they happen regardless of where they happen. If it has happened in another country, it likely has happened or will happen in yours.
