What important lessons have you learned during your years in the seed industry?
The industry is like a Ferris wheel: sometimes you are on top and sometimes you are at the bottom. Never close a door and do not fight with anybody, because you never know who will be on top in the future. The business is a very good, very noble business from which one can make an honest and decent living. It is not, however, the business to be in if one wants to retire a millionaire at 40 and expects to own planes, houses and yachts!

Always test what you buy and sell, so you know exactly the quality of the seed that you will need to back up!

Stay independent, have your own brand, and have some sort of proprietary research and technology base.

Be patient. This is a long term business, You are not always on top, and you don't always have the best options, because varieties come and go in the constant evolution towards increasingly better genetics.

Make many friends and travel a lot: everybody and every place offers something to learn that you can bring home to improve your own company!

Specialize and realize that nobody can do it all alone. Depend on those who are specialists in the areas where you are not.
