Biotechnology has
been a major issue, especially with regards to species for
which Mexico is considered the center of origin.
Mexico's
biodiversity, the fact that it is the center of origin of many
important species like corn, squash, and tomatoes, and the
negative reaction to this technology by many environmental and
consumer groups have put the adoption of these technologies
and the labeling of food products that contain
biotechnological processes in their components at the
forefront of any debate on agriculture and food production.
For the time
being, especially regarding corn, a 10 year moratorium on
entry of this technology has been placed. Just recently, the
federal penal code has been modified to make it a federal
crime to import or use any GMO species which has not been
authorized for use in Mexico. |
