Mexico depends on
foreign multinationl seed companies to feed itself. We have
the capability to produce enough food, but both the genetics
and the seed required to grow this food come from foreign
companies.
This is due to
the fact that our national seed industry is all but non
existent. The challenge is to change this situation and start
building a national seed industry from scratch.
Our industry is
still heavily taxed and very strictly regulated by the
government. As a result, seed is quite expensive in Mexico,
especially when you factor in the financial cost of the credit
that seed companies must extend to their customers in order to
compete and the cost of not recuperating around 3 to 5
percent of the sales made on credit. |
