Many
horticultural seed companies specialize in either flowers or
vegetables. Sakata does both. Are there advantages and
synergies to this approach? Do your vegetable breeders, for
instance, benefit from the expertise of your flower breeders
and vice versa?
Not sure if the breeders benefit, but the Production
Department benefits from being in both Vegetables and
Flowers. Working with both products has opened up our minds
to accept different ideas.
Sales department has benefited from being in both
Vegetables and Flowers. Working with both products has
created ability to take values from one and apply to the
other as well as to create an open and questioning environment.
There are unique aspects to each part of our business
that we need to understand clearly and do well. We cannot
force the "vegetable way" on flowers and vice versa.
