1995-2015 : 20 years of EU intellectual property rights for plant breeders

Angers, France
October 1, 2015

Press conference with Martin Ekvad (President of the CPVO) and Vytenis Andriukaitis (EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety)

The Community Plant Variety Office celebrated its 20th anniversary by hosting a half-day seminar on 1 October at Terra Botanica (Angers).

Speaking after the event, Martin Ekvad (President of the CPVO) said that “the CPVO manages the largest system of plant breeders’ rights in the world. This seminar was an excellent opportunity to communicate the role of the CPVO and its impact on the lives of EU citizens.”

“The CPVO encourages innovation and plant breeding for the benefit of everyone. This event allowed journalists to engage with and interview experts and policy makers in the world of agriculture, intellectual property and plant variety rights. I was delighted to have such a high level of media interest – their presence was key to ensuring that the message of the CPVO reaches our stakeholders and the EU citizens.”

“Not only did the event bring the PVR community together, it also gathered all those who contributed to the success of the CPVO and the CPVR system through their continual cooperation and support. Namely, the Member States represented by the members of the CPVO Administrative Council, the European institutions, the examinations offices, the CPVO staff members, UPOV, the breeders and the breeders’ organisations.”

Martin Ekvad and Carlos Godinho (Vice-President of the CPVO) were particularly honoured to welcome

Vytenis Andriukaitis (EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety), Francis Gurry (Secretary General of UPOV & Director General of WIPO) and MEP Czeslaw Siekierski (Chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Parliament).

“The presence of such high profile speakers raised the profile of the event and provided an insight into the world of intellectual property, plant variety rights and breeders.”

“Moreover, the participation of representatives of local, regional and national French authorities made this event truly special. We were delighted to welcome Christophe Béchu (Mayor of Angers) and Patrick Dehaumont (Director General of the French Department of Food, representing the French Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Rural affairs) to our event. The presence of our Mayor and high level Government officials really highlighted the commitment of the French Government to the CPVO and the system of EU plant variety rights.”

In conclusion, Martin Ekvad noted that “the CPVO looks forward to many more years of fruitful cooperation with its partners and stakeholders, working together to shape an innovative future for the EU plant sector and EU plant breeders”.
