The government of Tanzania
has developed a new policy called the National Biosafety
Framework (NBF) to limit importation of genetically-modified
organism (GMO) technology.
The NBF was prepared in accordance
with the Cartagena Protocol and is intended to prevent
“environmental and socio-economic effects” of GMOs.
The article says that the NBF,
which requires filing an application and obtaining written
government approval to import GMOs, could be perceived as a
government gesture towards allowing GMO technology and products
because there has not yet been any individual or institutional
importation of GMOs in Tanzania.
The NBF’s coordinator, Dr.
Shaabani Mwinjaka, said, “We cannot forbid importation of the
technology because there are some good uses of it such as
Insulin.”
