In addition the open-pollinated winter oilseed rape
variety, Symphony, has been approved for addition to the
HGCA Recommended List but will not be added unless it is
cleared for marketing in the UK.
"The new wheat varieties have some interesting
characteristics," said HGCA Recommended Lists manager, Dr
Jim McVittie.
"Mascot is a nabim Group 2 milling variety. It is lower
yielding than Einstein but is highly rated by the millers so
should attract milling premiums above those seen for
Einstein. Alchemy is a feed wheat with very high yields and
good disease resistance. Gatsby has genetic resistance to
Orange Wheat Blossom Midge and is an improved package over
other resistant varieties. Finally, Hyperion carries the
Rendezvous source of eyespot resistance so should offer
growers a non-chemical approach to eyespot control."
The four new additions to the winter oilseed rape list
add to the five excellent varieties added last year. "We
have seen some very good varieties come through trials in
the last couple of years. Of the eighteen recommended
oilseed rape varieties in trial this year, half have been
added to the List in the past two years" said Dr McVittie.
"Their average yield gross output is 6% above the more
established varieties."
Of the two new winter barley varieties, Colibri had given
yields 5% above established six-rows and is very close to
the hybrid, Colossus. A new hybrid, Boost, is similar in
yield to Colossus but has improved grain quality and disease
resistance characteristics.
The new spring barley Appaloosa is still undergoing tests
for IoB approval but shows promise for the production of
malt for distilling. It is recommended for the North-East
region.
