New NIAB Herbage Lists

Significant changes have been made to the 2004/05 NIAB Recommended Lists of herbage varieties this year. The performance of 47 grass and herbage legume varieties was considered and 14 new varieties were added to the lists whilst 13 were removed.

Of particular merit was the movement from provisionally recommended (PG) to fully recommended (G) of the Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass Orion, Late Perennial Ryegrass Romark, Late tetraploid Ryegrass Delphin, Italian Ryegrass Adin, Italian Tetraploid Gemini, and the White Clover variety Action. They all have exceptional yields with quality, good disease resistance and ground cover for their respective groups.

NIAB grass specialist Steven Bentley commented “These additions confirm the value of new varieties, with plant breeders continuing to offer advances in yield, quality, disease resistance and persistence to stock farmers.”

“The herbage recommended lists are funded by merchants in the NIAB Grass Levy Scheme and farmers should always consult contributing trade members for the most up to date information,” he added.

NIAB will be exhibiting grass variety plots, including those added here to the Recommended List, at Seale Hayne, Devon on Thursday 13th May and at Headley Hall, Yorkshire on Tuesday 18th May. Both events will start at 11.00am and provide an excellent opportunity to discuss new developments within the grass market and consider the potential of the varieties available for mixtures.
