Great Lakes Hybrids announces new grower incentive program for YieldGard® Bt hybrids
OVID, Michigan
October 26, 1998

Great Lakes Hybrids is pleased to announce a new grower incentive progam for its line-up of YieldGard Bt hybrids. The program helps bring the value of YieldGard Bt hybrids more in line with current commodity market conditions.

"Great Lakes Hybrids is pleased to pass along to growers a great product savings on our
entire line-up of YieldGard Bt hybrids," said Frank Hardimon, corn product manager. "Farmers are feeling economic pressure this year, and we want to help all we can in the 1998-99 season. We were the first in the industry to recognize the need to reduce costs by releasing seed pricing in early July. Now, we're additionally lowering prices and technology fees on Bt hybrids, along with announcing lower prices on Roundup Ready and conventional soybeans.

"Growers also have the option of holding off payment until later in the year and still saving
money with our industry-leading early pay discount program," says Mike Stephenson,
president of Great Lakes Hybrids. "For years, we have lead the industry with an early pay
discount that is three to five percent higher than our competitors. In years like this, it means
even more to the farmer's bottom line."

Bt hybrids protect against European corn borer, which can devastate crops. Although pressure from the pests is initially reported to be light to moderate this year in the Midwest, it can very greatly from year to year. Farmers report that Bt hybrids give them one less worry during harvest time. With lower prices and decreased tech fees it's an easier decision to make.

"Data from Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota show that Bt hybrids produced break even or greater returns in ten of the last 13 years, with an average return of $7.96 more than the total cost of the technology," said Hardimon. "Corn borer presence goes in cycles, but farmers are generally willing to hedge their bets to have that peace of mind."

Great Lakes Hybrids introduced its proprietary Bt hybrids to the marketplace in December 1997, becoming one of the first six companies in the world to offer elite proprietary YieldGard Bt hybrids to the marketplace. The company is affiliated with KWS in Germany, a seed-only company, and has research stations in Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa and Puerto Rico. This research program has been able to produce top performing conventional genetics for incorporation of the new transgenic traits.
