POSITION:
Assistant
Plant Breeder
HeinzSeed, part of the HJ
Heinz Company, has an opening for an assistant plant breeder in
its tomato breeding program. HeinzSeed is THE global leader in
processing tomato seed with sales in over 40 countries. HJ Heinz
has been conducting research in agriculture since 1916 and
breeding tomatoes since 1936. Heinz believes that good food is
grown, not made; and it begins with the seed. We are looking for
an individual who is creative and driven to contribute to
HeinzSeed’s vision of providing the best tomato varieties to our
customers. This position can provide opportunities for career

Location: Stockton, California
Job purpose:
Support two tomato breeders
by providing logistics support and selection assistance at
the Stockton research location.
Job responsibilities
• Perform tomato selection
work in early generations
• Incorporate new, traits from unadapted germplasm
• Coordinate incoming and outgoing research seed samples
• Organize seed for research plot trials
• Maintain research seed inventories
• Summarize and report data
• Assist in sampling for experimental work
• Contribute to breeding strategy and reducing time to
market
• Participate in activity planning
Working conditions
• Considerable outdoor work
during summer/fall is required; California summers can be
hot.
• A full commitment to putting in extra time during peak
seasons.
• Pressure to meet critical deadlines for seed shipments.
• Limited amount of travel may be required, mostly within
California.
• Teamwork mentality - we all pitch in to help get the job
done!
Desired qualifications of
eligible applicants
• BS in a horticulture or
genetics related discipline (MS preferred).
• 2 or more years experience in an applied plant breeding
related field.
• Ability to work legally within the United States.
• Strong organizational skills and attentive to details.
• Strong computer proficiency in MS Office (MS Access
experience is a plus).
• Excellent English speaking/writing skills (Bilingual in
Spanish is a plus).
• Demonstrated creativity in solving problems and
identifying efficiency improvements.
• Ability to work well as part of a team, but also
independently.
• Someone that is an active, hands-on participant.
