POSITION:  Research Station Manager

Location: De Forest, Wisconsin

We seek a motivated candidate as our STATION MANAGER in De Forest, Wisconsin, which is responsible for the day-to-day operations at the research station. This role consults with vegetable breeders and other site users to determine support work to be done, prioritizes work and sees that it is accomplished. The Manager is also responsible for overseeing field, greenhouse and facility staff both on and off station to effectively manage assets and resources by providing services and supplies to meet objectives/milestones.

The core areas of responsibility this position are as follows:

I. Safety
- Provide assistance and arrange for resources to promote safety while leading the safety programs at the site; supports all employees in their ownership of the safety programs; maintains site compliance with permitting, regulations (EPA, USDA, etc.) and records documentation.

II. Human resources
- Hire, train and supervise full and part time station support staff. Champion continuous improvement plans for site support staff including training, development and promotion. Follows DPR (Development Performance & Rewards) processes completing mid and year-end reviews and Personal Development Plans while establishing a culture based on the Monsanto Pledge.

III. Agronomic Expertise
- Assist in developing new methods of conducting research tasks to improve quality and efficiency. Keep abreast of new developments to improve insect, weed, disease and crop culture over present recommendations.

IV. Supply Management
- Acquire and maintain adequate facilities and equipment to accomplish company goals; locate and rent appropriate yield trial land while meeting budget forecasts.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor's degree in an Ag related field

  • 5+ years related experience and/or training with significant people and project management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Extensive working knowledge of site management, including but not limited to facilities operations with knowledge of vegetable farming practices 

  • Experience in greenhouse operations preferred

  • People leadership experience with effective interpersonal communication and management skills

  • Capability to work with people in such a manner as to build high morale and group commitments to goals and objectives

  • Building, machine and equipment repair and maintenance knowledge

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, basic computer skills (Word, Excel, e-mail

  • Budget preparation and management

  • Ability to master other software such as SAP and facilities maintenance programs

  • Some travel is required

Desired skills:

- This individual must have foresight and take the initiative to accomplish necessary tasks.
- Have the ability to adapt to quickly changing direction and priorities.
- Be results oriented, completing tasks in a timely manner.
- Possess or have the ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicators license and have a valid Wisconsin - - Drivers license.
- Knowledge of greenhouses and greenhouse culture a plus.
