POSITION:
Associate
Scientist in Maize Physiology
The International Maize and
Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is seeking a suitable,
qualified candidate for an Associate Scientist position in Maize
Physiology to support the development of high-yielding,
stress-tolerant maize varieties for tropical and subtropical
environments in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
The position will involve considerable travel both within Mexico
and overseas. Based at CIMMYT’s campus 45 km northeast of Mexico
City, Mexico, the appointment is initially for three years, with
the opportunity for extension into a career position.
A major responsibility will be research in the project "Drought
Tolerant Maize for Africa," including large-scale
phenotyping of drought tolerant populations, detailed
physiological characterization of maize germplasm, and
adaptation of in vivo doubled haploid technology. Other primary
responsibilities will include reporting of results in
peer-reviewed journals and writing grant proposals to funding
agencies on maize adaptation to drought and other abiotic
stresses (low-N, high temperatures, waterlogging).
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
- PhD in crop physiology,
breeding, or a closely related area, preferably with
emphasis on maize and abiotic stress tolerance.
- At least two years
postdoctoral experience as a crop physiologist in maize or
another field crop.
- Track record in scientific
refereed publications.
- Previous collaboration
with breeders in phenotyping and QTL mapping.
- Enthusiasm for field based
research with good knowledge of statistics, experimental
design, and trial management.
- Proficiency in written and
verbal English; ability to communicate in Spanish or
willingness to learn.
- Proven ability to organize
and coordinate complex tasks and strong self motivation and
innovative skills.
- Interest in international
research and development.
- Flexibility to spend
extended periods away from home base.
- Demonstrated ability to
work collegially and collaboratively in diverse,
multicultural partnerships.
