Role
Purpose
Assist in
the development of genetically improved cucurbits varieties.
Accountabilities
-
Manage day-to-day operations
of greenhouses, growth chambers, fields, and seed rooms.
-
Prepare common laboratory
stocks, inventory control/ordering of consumables, make
technical supplies available to breeding team at all levels
at all times, and oversight and maintenance of equipment
(including project vehicles and machinery)

Execute trials from seed
requisition, count, packaging, treatment, field/growth
chamber/greenhouse preparation, sowing, labeling, and
counting stand.

Collecting samples for
molecular marker analysis, interpret results, and
select/transplant/rogue desired/undesired genotypes based
upon results and Plant Scientist's directions.

Manage directly shipment of
seeds (including preparation of proper documentation)
nationally and internationally.
-
Personally grow seedlings for
transplanting, pathology testing, and any other test that
requires seedlings in flats/pots as experimental units.
-
Assist with growing and
maintaining plants including all facets, such as soil and
container preparation, protection, pruning/staking,
irrigation, and fertilization, when direct growing
responsibilities do not apply.

Maintain/update protocols for
all tactical activities of breeding program management.
-
Manage seed inventory using
Syngenta databases and order seeds when necessary.
-
Supervise assigned technicians
and seasonal personnel, and manage clerical aspects of
reporting their hours of work to clerical staff.
-
Identify proactively and
perform miscellaneous breeding support duties as needed,
such as pollinating, harvesting, and data collection. Ensure
pollinations during week-ends and supervise seasonal labors
during and beyond regular business hours.

Manage seed extraction,
disinfection, and packaging and inventorying process.
-
Work in field to move selected
breeding material into/from greenhouse via plants, cuttings,
or seed.

Coordinate with other
Vegetable research personnel and projects for local
management of breeding operations.

Assist Plant Scientist with
all aspects of the research program and possess knowledge to
carry them through to completion. Also, manage program in
the absence of the Plant Scientist.

Assist in evaluation of new
experimental hybrids and selection within segregating
populations. Collect quantitative and qualitative data as
required by Plant Scientist. Report those data in Syngenta
databases.

Collect photographic
documentation of specific germplasm/traits and upload them
to Syngenta databases.
-
Enforce safety procedures
within the breeding program.

Perform other duties as
assigned.
Knowledge,
experience & capabilities
Critical Knowledge and Education Requirements:
• Bachelors in Plant Science/Agronomy/Horticulture required.
MS degree preferred. Three (3) to five (5) years comparable
experience preferred.
Critical Skills:
• Computer skills including: Word, Excel, Access,
PowerPoint, Outlook, scanning, printing.
• Good general management skills.
• Accurate, efficient, and results oriented.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in Spanish language or ability to learn it
during the first year of employment.
• Knowledge of seed production techniques and
purity/identity assurance.
Critical Experience:
• Understanding of plant biology, genetics and/or vegetable
pathology.
• General knowledge of field and greenhouse practices.
• Understanding of inventory management.
• General knowledge of seed biology/technology.
• Understanding of pathogen transmission, and plant/seeds
contamination and its prevention.
