POSITION: Farm Technician

Job location: Naples, Florida

Role Purpose

To provide proactive site and farm maintenance, cost effective and timely repairs for field, greenhouse equipment and general station facilities.

Accountabilities

  • Inspect and perform preventative maintenance on all greenhouses and greenhouse equipment and farm implements.

  • Assist in preparing land for planting (cultivating, laying plastic, planting, setting up irrigation and fertilizing).

  • On-call for various types of farm emergencies or unscheduled work based on business needs or weather.

  • Performs various tractor driver duties including weed management for all projects.

  • Help determine, or plan and carry out as assigned, appropriate equipment activities on research land to meet needs of Research project leaders.

  • In areas of responsibility and in concert with the Farm coordinator, determine quantities, order, and arrange and/or apply needed agricultural chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides).:

  • When directed, request water from irrigation district and/or coordinate water use among Research projects and with leased landowners.

  • Provide horticultural and field personnel support.

  • Supervise third party personnel involved in maintenance, repair or construction projects.

  • Supervise or performs special projects as necessary including farm enhancement.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Other accountabilities specific to the Naples, Florida research station
     

  • Develop and maintain a maintenance log for all critical facility and farm equipment

  • Member of site safety committee

  • Maintain up-to-date CPR and First Aid training and serve as a “first responder” in these areas at the station

  • Supervise 3rd party repair and construction persons when on-site

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of outside contractors and suppliers of various materials and services needed for station maintenance and new construction projects.

  • Maintain facility grounds and general landscaping, may require tractor operation.

  • Available for various on-call types of farm emergencies or unscheduled work based on business needs or weather.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, experience & capabilities

Critical knowledge

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Valid Drivers license required. Commercial Drivers License preferred.
• Pesticide applicators License.
• Knowledgeable of safety training and able to apply to crews supervised.

Critical experience

• Five (5) or more years of comparable maintenance experience in the agricultural or seed industry.
• Safety classes related to the job preferred.
• Agricultural orientation to work experience required.

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

• Basic computer skills
• Demonstrated electrical skills
• Demonstrated plumbing skills
• Demonstrated welding skills
• Valid drivers license required
• Strong organization and problem solving skills.
• Mechanical skills.
• Record keeping skills.
• Ability to operate farm equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of farm equipment
• Ability to communicate and work well with others.
• Ability to commit to and maintain a safe working environment for all employees
• Ability to create maps for planting and irrigation, tracking pesticide application.
