Job purpose

Within specified area, manage, monitor and provide advice relating to the specific agricultural aspects of contracted seed production in order to meet the production plan of providing a consistent supply of high quality commercial and stock seed to ensure the long term profitability success of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Learn all of the necessary operations required in producing quality lettuce seed.

• Participate in ground preparation for sowing which includes driving a tractor, operating equipment, etc.

• Participate in planting crops including driving a tractor and calibrating a planter.

• Set up sprinkler irrigation systems and utilize them for establishing germination of lettuce seed.

• Complete necessary cultural activities such as fertilization and cultivation of all seed crops.

• Measure fields and prepare maps.

• Complete necessary roguing by being able to identify off types and diseased plants.

• Complete de heading operations required to promote bolting.

• Monitor fields for weeds, insects, disease, etc.

• Execute the timely hand harvesting of all commercial, stock seed, and research seed crops.

• Maintain and operate all equipment used in planting, cultivating, and harvesting seed crops.

• Provide oral communication on day to day activities.

• Work with all temporary employees in a team environment to carry out all seed production operations.

• Assist with the processing and milling of lettuce seed.

• Learn the production skills necessary for producing other species such as onion seed.

Educational Qualifications Desired

• Bachelor’s Degree in agriculture related field with three years of experience in farming and/or agronomic practices.

Skills and Experience Desired

• Ability to obtain and keep updated Pesticide Consultants License.

• Proficiency with MS Office products.

• Must be capable and competent in operating farm machinery.

• Must be able to safely lift 50 lbs.

• Fluency in speaking and writing in English, Spanish language fluency also preferred.

Working Conditions

• Ability to work in hot, dusty, conditions and around agricultural pesticides.

• Ability to work around pollinating insects.
