Assistant Plant Scientist, Tomatoes and Melons Groups
Location: Woodland, California
ROLE PURPOSE
Performs research and/or development in collaboration and
support of plant breeding strategies to create profitable
products.

Hybrid development and
evaluation, including exercising technical discretion in the
design, execution and interpretation of experiments that
contribute to project strategies.

Assist in the evaluation of
new experimental hybrids and selection within segregating
populations.

Assist in disease screening
activities
-
Assist with field inspections
and sample collections for disease identification
-
Assist with all facets of
growing and maintaining plants, including chemical
application, soil and container preparation and fertilizing.

Coordinate pollinations,
harvest and collection of harvest data.
-
Work in the field to move
selected breeding material into the greenhouse (plants,
cuttings or seed).

Assist in the day-today
operations of greenhouses, fields and see rooms.

Prep common laboratory stocks,
inventory control/ordering of consumables and oversight of
lab equipment.
EDUCATION & SKILLS
-
2-5 years related experience
-
BA required
-
MS preferred
-
Knowledge of plant breeding,
plant biology statistics and agriculture.
-
Demonstrated knowledge of the
whole plant
-
Knowledge of plant pathology.
CRITICAL SKILLS
-
Maintain high level of
professional expertise through familiarity with scientific
literature and exploration of technology.

Professionalism including
creation of an ethical, highly communicative and
transparent, results oriented environment within the
development team within Syngenta.

Ability to interact with

resulting in the achievement of program and company goals.
