POSITION:
Agronomist

We are now hiring for an excellent career opportunity as an
Agronomist within our El Campo, Texas location.
The role of the Agronomist for Rice Hybrids is to ensure
timely supply of required quantities and quality of experimental
hybrid seed, to ensure efficient inventory management of hybrid
seed, and to execute initial production technology development
for new hybrids. In this capacity, the position interfaces with
the Americas Rice Development Manager, with strong interface
with supply chain counterpart responsible for seed production
studies. Key responsibilities include:
Production
- Plan and manage all logistics for production of all
experimental rice hybrids.
- Produce required quantities of all experimental rice
hybrids
- Establish genetic purity standards as required by the
company through careful processing, planting, manual and
chemical rouging, harvest and storage.
- Ensure timely supply of required quantities and quality of
experimental hybrid seed for trialing.
Production Research
- Create production protocols defining the best approach to
maximize hybrid seed production.
- Study seed treatments to improved germination, stand
establishment, and disease resistance.
- Review multiple approaches to refine staggering option
between male and female.
- Utilize plant growth regulators to extend viability of
females in production blocks.
- Develop timing schedules and pollination techniques to
maximize outcrossing between the male and female.
Seed Inventory
- Administrate a current and accurate seed inventory list
- Determine seed lot tests and dispense seed for genetic
confirmation tests and to ensure seed meets standards
conditions.
- Retain quality conditions of seed in inventory.
- Maintain database of seed lots.
Qualifications:
- MS in agronomy, plant
breeding, agriculture, botany or life sciences, with 3 years
relevant work experience or a bachelors degree in these
specialties with a minimum of 5 years relevant work
experience in research or product development or equivalent
relevant working experience.
- Minimum three years of
field experience in hybrid rice seed production.
- Requires knowledge of
operation, maintenance, and repair of farm equipment.
- Must be organized,
team-oriented, possess leadership abilities, and proficient
in communication, personnel supervision, data collection and
management.
- Besides fluency in
English, good knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese is
desired.
