Job purpose
Assist the pathologist in
characterizing disease resistance of tomato and melon genotypes
for the purpose of varietal development. Cooperate closely with
a second assistant to supervise greenhouse, laboratory, office,
and field activities. As a team, the three will optimize the
efficiency and output of the pathology program by designing and
implementing new technologies and screening methods.
Responsibilities (shared
with the existing assistant)
Participate in pathology strategy and activity planning.
Plan weekly work schedule for greenhouse and laboratory.
Supervise hourly/seasonal workers in greenhouse,
laboratory, office, and field. Assist as needed.
Direct current disease screens; devise and evaluate new
ones.
Design, implement, evaluate and analyze experiments.
Maintain virulence of pathogen collection.
Manage databases received from breeders.
Review and summarize scientific literature. Offer concise
interpretations to colleagues.
Diagnose plant diseases.
Perform other activities on behalf of the pathologist in
diverse circumstances.
Educational Qualifications
Desired
M.S in
plant pathology or similar experience.
Basic course in applied statistics preferred.
Skills and Experience Desired
Working
knowledge of methods and equipment used by plant
pathologists.
Effective communicator and team player, but able to work
independently.
Attention to detail, organization, and good judgement.
Skilled at managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Fluency in oral and written English; bilingual
(English/Spanish) fluency preferred.
Computer software skills: MS Office and databases;
statistics preferred.
Working Conditions
Long
periods of repetitive tasks (seated or standing).
Heat and humidity in greenhouses and other protected
enclosures.
Occasional travel, possibly international.
