POSITION:
Raspberry
Breeder
In this position, you will be assisting in all aspects of the
raspberry breeding program, primarily in Northern California and
Washington State. You will also interact with the nursery
department in the propagation of selections and ensure accurate
collection of test-plot data and maintenance of the breeding
database.
Some of the specific
responsibilities include:
- Evaluate hybrid seedlings
and selections for horticultural characteristics,
encompassing field ratings, yield, and shelf life and flavor
analysis.
- Identify potential parent
material and crosses and work with supervisor to develop
crossing program.
- Use MS Excel and Access
database programming skills to summarize and generate
reports on plant breeding data for all test areas.
- Provide computer software
and programming support to other Driscoll employees.
- Work on post harvest
physiology projects to establish the shelf-life of new
selections and varieties.
- Generate labels for use
during nursery dig and experimental test plot data
collection.
- Assist Research Ranch
manager in establishment of test plots.
- Collect patent data of
newly commercialized raspberry varieties. Perform inventory
of nursery stock and verifies accuracy of nursery maps in
relation to inventory.
- Communicate and work
closely with Driscoll’s Research Department staff at various
locations.
- Travels to other Driscoll
Strawberry Associates, Inc. test locations to evaluate test
plots, as directed by supervisor.
- Follows Company policies
and practices while representing Driscoll’s in an ethical
and business-like manner in all interactions with employees,
government agencies, growers, etc.
- Ensure the safe keeping of
propriety varieties and confidential information.
Specific qualifications for
this job include the following:
- Bachelor of Science degree
or equivalent in Horticulture or Agricultural Science or 4
years of Experience in related field;
- Solid knowledge of and
experience with spreadsheet and database computer software
- Excellent verbal and
written communication skills
- Be a self-starter and have
a hands-on work ethic
- Be able to lift 50 pounds
on an intermittent basis
- Basic math skills
- A valid driver's license
and the ability to obtain and maintain company sponsored
vehicle insurance,
- Bi-lingual (Spanish) a
plus
